Decide the cost before you start

Gambling is entertainment with a price, like a concert ticket. The useful question is not how much you might win but how much the evening is allowed to cost. Pick that number first, and treat reaching it as the end of the session. You can set one below and the coach will hold you to it.

Which numbers you mark changes nothing. How many you mark changes the price, from 37.56% on a 3-spot ticket to 50.00% on a 1-spot, and every one of them is far dearer than a table game. Price any keno pay table

Expected is each ticket's house edge taken on the chips staked on it. A short session can land well above or below it, because much of a keno ticket's return sits in prizes that almost never come up.

A board that prices the ticket first

Keno is a lottery you can play every few minutes.

You mark between 1 and 10 numbers on a board of 80, 20 numbers are drawn, and the ticket pays by how many of yours came out. Nothing you do after buying the ticket matters, and which numbers you mark does not matter either: every number is as likely as every other.

What is worth learning is the price.

Keno is among the most expensive games on a casino floor, and how expensive depends on how many spots you mark. On the pay tables at this table the house keeps 37.56% of a 3-spot ticket and 50.00% of a 1-spot. Blackjack played by the chart at this site's table keeps 0.41%, so even the cheapest ticket here costs about 92 times as much for the same chips. The panel under the board prices the ticket you have marked before you draw it.

  • The board has 80 numbers. Mark from 1 to 10 of them, or take a quick pick.
  • A ticket costs 1, 5, 25 and 100 chips.
  • 20 different numbers are drawn for every ticket. Each of your numbers that comes out is a catch.
  • The ticket pays by its number of catches, from the pay table for the number of spots marked. Pays are for 1: a pay of 5 returns 5 chips for each chip staked, the stake included.
  • Catching all 10 spots of a 10-spot ticket pays 100,000 for 1, which is 10,000,000 chips on a 100-chip ticket.
  • Two tickets pay for catching nothing at all: a 9-spot ticket pays 2 for 1 and a 10-spot ticket pays 4 for 1 when none of its numbers are drawn.
  • Your spots stay marked for the next draw until you change them.

FAQ

Is this keno game played for real money?
No. The table uses play chips that have no value, cannot be bought, and cannot be cashed out or exchanged for anything. If you run out, you are handed another stack for free. There is no account and nothing to download.
How many numbers should I pick in keno?
No number of spots makes keno cheap. At this table the house edge by spots marked, from one to 10, is 50.00% on 1, 39.87% on 2, 37.56% on 3, 41.80% on 4, 45.73% on 5, 44.37% on 6, 40.46% on 7, 41.19% on 8, 43.63% on 9 and 42.88% on 10. The cheapest ticket is the 3-spot at 37.56% and the dearest is the 1-spot at 50.00%. The order is particular to these pay tables, so another game's will differ. What the spot count reliably changes is the shape of the results: fewer spots pay small amounts more often, more spots pay large amounts very rarely.
Do some keno numbers come up more often than others?
No. Every draw takes 20 of the 80 numbers with every number equally likely, whatever came out before. A number that has not appeared for a while is not due, and a number that has appeared often is not running hot. Your own choices and a quick pick are priced exactly the same.
What are the odds of catching every number?
On a 6-spot ticket, 1 in 7,753. On a 10-spot ticket, 1 in 8,911,711. Those figures depend only on the draw, not on what a game pays. Most tickets return nothing: a 6-spot ticket pays anything at all 1 in 6.2, and pays more than it cost 1 in 31.5.

How this game works

Each draw shuffles the numbers 1 to 80 in your browser so that every ordering is equally likely, and takes the first 20. The draw does not depend on your spots, your stake or your results.

The pay tables are the Maryland Lottery's published Classic Keno prize structure, retrieved September 8, 2026, for one to 10 spots. They are the same tables the keno odds calculator opens on, and that page links the source. They are a lottery's tables rather than a casino's, used here because they are published in full and can be checked.

The chance of catching exactly c of k marked spots is the hypergeometric probability C(k, c) × C(80 − k, 20 − c) / C(80, 20). The return to player is each catch's chance multiplied by what it pays, added up, and the house edge is what is left. Nothing is simulated: the tests recompute every return with exact whole-number arithmetic over all possible draws. A 6-spot ticket returns 55.63%, so a 5-chip one costs 2.22 chips on average.

The expected figure in the session panel is each ticket's house edge multiplied by the chips staked on it, added together.

Limits

  • These are one operator's pay tables. Keno pay tables differ widely from one game to the next, and the same number of spots can cost a different amount elsewhere.
  • Multipliers, bonus balls, progressive prizes, way tickets and multi-draw tickets are not offered here. Only a flat pay for each number of catches is.
  • The largest prizes are so rare that no practice session will show them at their true frequency. A session without one returns less than the stated figure.
  • Play chips do not feel like money. A run of tickets that return nothing is harder to stop after with a real stake.

This is a practice game for adults. It has no real-money play and links to none. Keno played for money keeps a large share of every ticket whatever numbers are marked: between 37.56% and 50.00% on these pay tables, and no way of choosing numbers changes that.
