Pot odds are the price the pot is offering you to continue. If there is 100 in the pot and you must call 25, you are risking 25 to win 125, so you need to win at least 25 / 125 = 20% of the time for the call to break even. Compare that break-even number with your chance of improving and the decision makes itself.
Your chance of improving comes from your outs — the cards that make your hand. The quick estimate is the rule of two and four: multiply outs by two for one card to come, by four for two. Nine flush-draw outs is roughly 18% by the river with one card left, or about 35% with two. The calculator uses the exact combinatorics as well as the shortcut.
When your raw equity falls short of the pot odds, implied odds can rescue the call: if you expect to win enough extra chips on later streets when you hit, a call that looks marginally negative now can be clearly correct. The tool shows how much more you would need to make on average.
FAQ
- How do I convert outs to a percentage?
- Exactly: with two cards to come the chance of hitting at least one out is 1 − (non-outs choose 2) / (47 choose 2). The rule of four (outs × 4) is a close approximation up to about 8 outs; above that it slightly overstates.
- What are implied odds?
- The extra chips you expect to win on later streets when your draw completes. They let you call slightly unfavourable pot odds now because the true reward is larger than what is in the pot at the moment.
- Do pot odds apply when I might be drawing dead?
- Only if your outs are real. If some of your 'outs' also improve the opponent to a better hand, discount them. The calculator assumes the outs you enter are clean.
