Stonefall Temple: a free Gonzo's Quest alternative

Built like Gonzo's Quest: blocks that fall instead of reels that spin, wins that shatter and refill, and a multiplier that steps up with every fall. Played with chips that are worth nothing, with the machine's real numbers and a session coach beside it.

Each fall in a spin steps the multiplier up. A new spin starts it again.

Gambling is entertainment with a price, like a concert ticket. The useful question is not how much you might win but how much the evening is allowed to cost. Pick that number first, and treat reaching it as the end of the session. You can set one below and the coach will hold you to it.

What a multiplier ladder really pays

Stonefall Temple is a free Gonzo's Quest alternative: our own slot machine, built to play the way NetEnt's Gonzo's Quest plays.

Here that is five columns, three rows and 20 lines that pay from the left. Nothing spins. Carved blocks drop into place, the blocks on a winning line shatter, the stack above falls and new blocks drop in, and each fall in the same spin steps a multiplier up: 1x, 2x, 3x then 5x. Three gold seals in a row award 10 free falls on a taller ladder that tops out at 15x. If you came looking for a free game like Gonzo's Quest, this is that mechanic. The name, the blocks, the sound, the weights and the pay table are ours.

The multiplier, by winning screen in one spin

A paid spin

  1. 1xFirst
  2. 2xSecond
  3. 3xThird
  4. 5xFourth

One of the 10 free falls

  1. 3xFirst
  2. 6xSecond
  3. 9xThird
  4. 15xFourth

A win shatters, the stack falls, and the next win in the same spin is paid one step higher. The ladder stops at its last step and starts again at 1x on the next paid spin.

What is different from Gonzo's Quest, and from any real machine, is everything a real machine leaves out.

This one returns 95.9% of the chips bet on it and keeps 4.1%, a figure simulated over 200,000,000 rounds of the same code the machine plays with. 31.5% of spins pay something, and 49% of those pay less than the spin cost, so only 15.1% of spins leave you with more chips than before. The machine lights up for all of them. The status line under the blocks and the coach beside them tell you which kind you just had.

Falling blocks do one thing to a session that spinning reels do not: a single paid spin can win, fall and win again, and it feels like several spins.

It is one. The ladder over the blocks is lit all the time, and a win at its top step, 5x, is paid on about 1 spin in 313. There is no decision in a slot to get better at. This page is for entertainment, and for seeing clearly what this kind of machine does and what a session of it costs on average.

Shares of everything the machine pays back.

  • Five columns, three rows and 20 fixed lines. Every spin plays all 20 lines at a bet of 20, 40, 100 or 200 chips, which is one twentieth of that on each line.
  • A line pays for three, four or five of the same block in a row, counted from the left end of the line only.
  • The wild lands in columns 2, 3 and 4 only and stands in for every block, the gold seal included.
  • When any line wins, the blocks on the winning lines shatter, the blocks above them fall, and new blocks drop in from the top. The new screen is paid, and this repeats until a screen pays nothing.
  • Each fall in the same spin steps the multiplier up: 1x, 2x, 3x then 5x, where it stays. The multiplier starts again at 1x on the next paid spin.
  • The gold seal lands in columns 1, 2 and 3 only. Three in a row on a line, from the left, award 10 free falls. A free fall is a spin that costs nothing, and its ladder is 3x, 6x, 9x then 15x.
  • Three gold seals on a line during a free fall award 10 more, every time it happens.
  • A round pays at most 2,500 times the bet. If it reaches that, it ends there and any free falls left are not played.
  • The whole round, free falls included, is decided when Spin is pressed. The animation plays it back and cannot change it.
  • Autoplay plays 10, 25, 50 or 100 spins at the current bet. It needs a loss limit before it starts, and it stops at that limit, when the spins run out, or when you stop it. Falls and the multiplier ladder play through. Free falls are a bonus feature: they play out, and then the run stops.
  • Sound starts on, and the Sound button switches it off.

FAQ

Is this slot played for real money?
No. The table uses play chips that have no value, cannot be bought, and cannot be cashed out or exchanged for anything. If you run out, you are handed another stack for free. There is no account and nothing to download.
What is the RTP of Stonefall Temple?
95.9%, simulated. That is the share of all chips bet that the machine paid back over 200,000,000 simulated rounds, so it keeps 4.1%. A run that long puts the figure within about 0.07 points of the true one. At the smallest bet of 20 chips that works out at about 82 chips per 100 spins on average, with wide swings around it in any one session.
How often does it pay?
31.5% of spins pay something, about 1 in 3. But 15.5% of spins pay less than the bet, which is a net loss that looks like a win. Only 15.1% of spins, about 1 in 7, pay more than they cost. The free falls start on 1.06% of spins, about 1 in 94.
Is Stonefall Temple a free alternative to Gonzo's Quest?
Yes. It is built like Gonzo's Quest: five columns, three rows, 20 lines paying from the left, blocks that fall instead of reels that spin, wins that break and refill, a multiplier that rises with each fall up to 5x, and 10 free falls with a multiplier up to 15x. It is free, it needs no account, and it is played with chips that have no value. It is not Gonzo's Quest itself, which is NetEnt's game, and it is not made, licensed or endorsed by NetEnt.
How is it different from Gonzo's Quest?
The mechanic is the same family and everything else is our own: the name, the art, the sound, the weights behind the blocks and the pay table. So the numbers are different too. Stonefall Temple returns 95.9% with a 31.5% hit rate and a cap of 2,500 times the bet, and those are this machine's figures only. They say nothing about Gonzo's Quest's. The other difference is what sits beside the blocks: the simulated figures, a status line that calls a payout smaller than the bet a loss, and a session coach.
How often does the multiplier reach the top step?
Rarely. 7.1% of paid spins win on a second screen, which is paid at 2x. 1.5% win on a third, at 3x. Only 0.32%, about 1 spin in 313, win on a fourth and are paid at 5x. The ladder is lit on the machine the whole time, so most of what it shows is what did not happen.
Is a chain of falls several wins?
No. It is one paid spin. The blocks can fall and pay several times, and the machine celebrates each one, but the whole chain was settled when Spin was pressed and it cost one bet. A chain can also add up to less than that bet.
Does autoplay change the odds?
No. Every spin is drawn the same way and the return stays 95.9%. What it changes is speed: more spins fit into an hour, and the cost of an hour is the number of spins times the 4.1% the machine keeps on each. That is why autoplay here will not start without a loss limit.
What is the most a spin can pay?
2,500 times the bet. The machine enforces that as a cap: a round that reaches it ends. In the 200,000,000 simulated rounds the largest was 2,500 times the bet and 1 reached the cap. A round that pays 100 times the bet or more comes up about once in 2,391 spins.

How this game works

Every block is drawn on its own from a set of weights for the column it lands in, with your browser's random number generator. Each column's weights add up to 105, 108, 108, 101 and 98 parts from column 1 to column 5. In every column Spiral is 21 of those parts and Jaguar is 6. The wild is 3 parts in each of columns 2, 3 and 4, and the gold seal is 7 parts in each of columns 1, 2 and 3. A block that drops in after a shatter is drawn from the same weights as a block on the first screen. Nothing else decides a result, and the full table of weights is printed in the code this page runs.

The 95.9% return is simulated, not counted. With wins feeding falls and free falls adding free falls, there are too many paths through a round to walk one at a time. So the figures come from 200,000,000 rounds played by the machine's own code from a fixed seed, which makes the run repeatable: an automated test replays the opening stretch of it and requires the same totals, to the chip. A run of that length leaves the return uncertain by about 0.07 points either way, 19 times in 20. One part can be checked exactly: what the first screen of a spin pays on average follows directly from the weights, and the test requires the simulation to agree with that sum. The house edge on the common casino bets puts the 4.1% this machine keeps in context.

Where the return comes from: 45% is paid by the first screen of paid spins at 1x, 29% by falls after the first on paid spins, which is the multiplier ladder at work, and 26% by free falls. A round that wins free falls plays 11.2 of them on average, retriggers included.

From the same run: 31.5% of spins pay anything, 15.5% pay something smaller than the bet, and 15.1% pay more than the bet. The spread of one spin's result has a standard deviation of 5.37 bets, which is the size of the swings around the average and puts this machine at medium to high volatility. There is no jackpot.

The expected figure in the session panel is the share the machine keeps multiplied by the chips you have bet on finished spins. The coach's count of spins in the last minute is taken from when you pressed Spin.

Limits

  • The weights and pay table were designed for this page. They are not a copy of Gonzo's Quest or of any other real machine, and these figures describe this machine only.
  • Gonzo's Quest is NetEnt's game and its name belongs to its owner. Stonefall Temple is an independent alternative built on the same kind of mechanic. It is not made, licensed or endorsed by NetEnt.
  • The figures are simulated, so each carries a small sampling error. The rarest results, such as the largest rounds, are the least well measured.
  • Two choices here are ours: the gold seals have to sit on one of the 20 lines, and a screen with seals on more than one line still awards 10 free falls.
  • A real slot is usually shipped in several return settings and the casino chooses one. The same title can keep noticeably more than the figure quoted for it, and a real machine does not print its weights.
  • The blocks are drawn by an ordinary browser random number generator. It is not an audited or certified generator, and nothing here should be read as a test of one.
  • Autoplay is here because Gonzo's Quest has it. It makes a machine cost more per hour, so it will not start without a loss limit, and the coach prices the pace while it runs. There is no turbo mode, because the sources we checked do not show that Gonzo's Quest has one.
  • There is no bonus buy and no gamble feature.
  • Play chips do not feel like money. A long blank run is harder to sit through, and to stop after, with a real stake.

This is a practice game for adults. It has no real-money play and links to none. Gonzo's Quest, or any slot played with money, keeps its share of every spin, and no way of timing or sizing the spins changes that. On this machine 49% of the spins that pay anything still cost more than they return, however many times the blocks fell.
